The scheme is promise by the Government to repay employers who do not dismiss their employees if they no longer have any work for them. It means that an employer can ‘furlough’ employees instead of laying them off or making them redundant and the Government will repay the employer 80% of their employees’ wages. An employer is required to ‘designate’ you as a furloughed worker. You cannot insist on being furloughed but you should discuss with your employer what arrangements they are making. If you are furloughed your employer should continue to pay your wages if you are furloughed and they will be able to claim the money back from the Government through HMRC.
